JCM Performs Interference Fit
Interference Fit Assembly of a Splined Shaft Onto a Bevel Gear
Splined Shaft Diameter: 14” – Bevel Gear Diameter: 36”
No Keyways & Interference: .021”
The above photos depict JC Machine personnel performing the Interference Fit Assembly of a Splined Shaft onto a Bevel Gear via the use of Dry Ice, Alcohol and Heat.
The Splined Shaft is immersed in a bath of Dry Ice and Alcohol for several hours where it will reach an approximate temperature of minus 110 Degrees Fahrenheit and where it will undergo a reduction in Shaft Diameter of approximately .016”. At the same time, the Bevel Gear is being heated until the Bore Diameter expands by approximately .021”.
Once the target dimensions for both the Splined Shaft and the Bevel Gear are reached, then the splined shaft is slowly lowered through the bore of the Bevel Gear to its final position and the assembly is not moved until it reaches room temperature.
This particular assembly is for the Main Drum Gear Box on a Ship-to–Shore Crane. The work was performed on March 16, 2016
